This past week, while at work in the Intensive Care Unit, I was reminded how to look beyond appearances and draw upon empathy. I was moved by a patient’s life circumstances and wondered how she did it. I (fortunately) had only to imagine for several fleeting minutes how it might look, feel and weigh, if upon my own shoulders. Those brief moments spent in thoughtful reflection increased my capacity to extend compassion and leave the day with gratitude.
I remembered watching a Cleveland Clinic video many years ago about empathy and caring for patients. It left a deep impression on me. We never really know what is happening in a person’s world; not my patient’s, not my coworker’s, nor any individual I come in contact with on a daily basis.
